116 complaints about foreign interference were dismissed in Canada’s last two elections: gov’t memo

OTTAWA, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) –– During the last two federal elections, a total of 116 tips made by people concerning potential foreign election interference were dismissed outright by Canada’s Office of Elections Commissioner Caroline Simard, according to an internal briefing note. 

According to Blacklock’s Reporter, a November 1, 2022 briefing note written by Simard’s staff shows that she chose not to investigate the tips because the investigations were “difficult” to carry out.

The briefing note stated that foreign components in investigations “almost always give rise to delays, complexities and other challenges.” 

Because of this, a “significant amount of time and resources will often be required simply to obtain the evidence located outside Canada.” 

“If evidence is under the jurisdiction of a country with which Canada does not have cooperation agreements it may even be impossible to acquire the evidence,” read the note.  

In total, the Commissioner’s office got 16 allegations of election interference during the 2021 election campaign season, but all of them were dismissed and the files were “closed.”
