A-10 obliterates the competition in favorite-aircraft poll

Our readers can’t get enough of the “BRRRRT.”

Out of the 1,000 voters who picked a favorite Air Force plane in our recent poll, more than 400 chose the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

The close-air support jet, with its Gatling gun and intimidating nose art, beat out 11 other aircraft by a landslide.

With 41 percent of voters choosing the Warthog, the F-22 Raptor and F-15 Eagle came in tied at second place — with 9 percent of votes each.

Air Force could ground A-10s as early as FY18 as life of wings runs out

Even if Congress funds the additional wing sets, the Air Force will not be able to hold a competition, award a contract and modify its A-10s with new wings before the service life of the old wings runs out, said Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski, commander of Air Force Materiel Command.

Even with all the love from airmen, however, the Air Force might have to ground more than 100 A-10s as early as fiscal 2018, according to Defense News,  a sister publication of Air Force Times. 

The aircraft’s wings are aging out faster than replacements can be provided, and unless Congress approves funds for new wings on 109 of the 281 A-10s,
