Canadian prosecutors drop murder charge against Ontario man who shot armed home invader

(LifeSiteNews) — A 22-year-old Ontario man who was charged with murder after defending his mother and home from armed intruders has had the charge dropped.

On Monday, Crown prosecutors withdrew the second-degree murder charge levied against Ali Mian, who in February reportedly shot and killed an armed home invader in the Milton, Ontario, home he lives in with his mother, Global News reported.

Mian, a legal firearm owner, had fatally shot one of a group of four armed invaders who, after breaking into the suburban home, had “attacked his mother.” Despite the fact that Mian was in legal possession of the firearm he discharged, and was himself one of the victims of the alleged crime, he was nonetheless charged with the murder of the intruder, which sparked debate and backlash at the time.

“I thank the crown for using their reasonable discretion and agreeing to withdraw the charges today,” Mian’s lawyer, Jag Virk, said in response to the dropped charge, adding that his client is “very happy and thankful.”
