OTTAWA, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) – The now-retired politician who wrote Canada’s Emergencies Act (EA) has questioned its use by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to quell the trucker Freedom Convoy, warning it might now be used in a more cavalier way.

“Emergencies legislation is designed to be legislation of last resort,” said Perrin Beatty as reported by Blacklock’s Reporter. Beatty served as a cabinet minister throughout the 1980s under Progressive Conservative Party Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

Beatty made the comments as part of testimony he gave at a recent joint parliamentary hearing regarding Trudeau’s use of the EA on February 14 to shut down the Freedom Convoy.

He noted that the EA is “explicit on that [being used as a last resort]” and that it is “designed to be used when there is no other legal authority available.”
