Israel Shells Lebanon After Rocket Attack

By The Editor

JERUSALEM, Israel – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fired artillery shells at Lebanon early Tuesday morning in response to two rockets that were fired from the country into northern Israel.

Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted one of the rockets, while another fell in an open area. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

“We remain prepared to defend Israel on all fronts,” the IDF said in a statement.

The military gave no details about who was responsible for firing the rockets from Lebanon, or what Israel targeted during its retaliatory attack.

The incident came hours after Syrian state media said Israel carried out airstrikes near Aleppo late Monday. Syrian media said Syria’s air defenses shot down most of the missiles in the attack.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war watchdog that monitors the conflict in Syria, said the Israeli airstrikes targeted weapons depots that belonged to Iranian-backed militia groups operating in the Aleppo province. The group said the strikes were followed by loud explosions.

The IDF typically does not comment on reports about its activities in Syria, but Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks against Iranian-backed groups in Syria over the years.

Israel is concerned about Iranian entrenchment on its northern border in Syria and Lebanon.
