LINCOLN, Nebraska (LifeSiteNews) — Nebraska lawmakers passed one bill on Friday that protects preborn babies from abortions at 12-weeks gestation and restricts access to surgical mutilation of gender-confused kids.

Legislative Bill 574 is not a complete prohibition on abortion, nor does it go as far as a failed six-week abortion ban. It prohibits abortion when “the probable gestational age of the preborn child has been determined to be twelve or more weeks,” although it allows for exceptions for rape, incest and “medical emergency.”

Nearly 94% of abortions occur prior to 13 weeks gestation according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, so this bill will protect few additional babies from abortion beyond the state’s current 20-week limit.

The bill also prohibits “gender-altering surgery” on minors, while requiring the state’s chief medical officer to issue regulations on the use of transgender drugs.
