Ontario court drops criminal charges against Freedom Convoy protester

(LifeSiteNews) — A protester facing legal scrutiny for his involvement in the Freedom Convoy had charges against him dropped this week. 

The Democracy Fund (TDF) announced on Tuesday that its lawyers “have secured an unqualified withdrawal for a Windsor man who was criminally charged in connection with the Freedom Convoy protests that took place in Windsor in February 2022.” 

Charges of “mischief and disobeying a court order” were brought against Eric Lemmon, who has been represented by TDF lawyers since May. According to a press release from the organization, “a two-day trial was set to commence on August 14, 2023, before the crown withdrew charges today.” 

The charges were dropped due to “no reasonable prospect of conviction.” TDF described the unqualified withdrawal—comparable to acquittal or stay-of-proceedings—as a “favourable resolution.” 

While Lemmon’s legal battle ended abruptly, criminal charges and trials continue for many leaders and participants in the Freedom Convoy, during which citizens pushed back against radical COVID-19 policies imposed by the Canadian government. 

Some peaceful protesters have also seen charges dropped while others have been punished for their participation. In May, a pastor and father was found guilty
