For the first time, an openly transgender lawmaker was elected in Virginia to replace a stringent anti-LGBT lawmaker.

Sending shockwaves across the country the openly transgendered, Danica Roem, replaced Bob Marshall who held office for 26 years and was previously elected 13 times.

“Tonight, voters chose a smart, solutions-oriented trans leader over a divisive anti-LGBTQ demagogue — sending a powerful message to anti-trans legislators all across the nation,” said Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, president and CEO of Victory Fund — a political action committee that works to increase the number of openly LGBTQ officials at all levels of government.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, also congratulated Roem in a tweet: “Couldn’t be more thrilled for Danica Roem. And good riddance to Bob Marshall, one of the most anti-choice, and anti-LGBTQ members of the VA House.”

“The message that I can succeed because of my gender, not despite it, because of who I am without being afraid of who I am is a human message,” Roem said in the September interview with Cosmopolitan.

Roem represents a turning point in American politics, being that he was originally a reporter it should come as no shock that he knew how to rally public opinion and support.

According to the Cosmopolitan interview, Roem states that whenever President Donald Trump makes a remark against the lgbt community, he turns it into a revue generating opportunity for his campaign.

Roem represents a dangerous “new” trend in public perception, however, he also represents a shift towards what many say is imperceivable. A world, predicted in 1971 in Europe, when the transgender movement was originally gaining momentum.
