On Tuesday, June 12th, 2018 history is in the making as two leaders, US President Donald Trump and North Korean Dictator Kim Jung Un, will sit down and talk peace for the first time.
After decades of escalation and uncertainty, it appears as though North Korea is ready to de-escalate tensions with the World. As a result, a historic summit will commence on Tuesday.
United States President Donald Trump, while speaking to reporters, prior to his flight to Singapore, stated that both countries respective contacts had already begun discussions and that the negotiations have so far been positive.
President Trump continued by building up the prospect of success with the tyrannical North Korean leader, informally known as ‘Rocket Man.’
“It’s unknown territory in the truest sense, but I really feel confident,” Trump said as he prepared to leave the ongoing G7 summit in Canada early and head to Asia.
“I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity… It’s a one-time shot,” he said at a press conference, adding that the North Koreans had been working “very well with us” ahead of the summit.
Before President Trump’s departure from Canada, he further stated that; “I am on a mission of peace and we’re going to be carrying the hearts of millions of people from all.”
“We have to get denuclearization, we have to get something going,” the President continued.
President Trump is somewhat optimistic about the meeting, saying that it won’t take long for him to discern if Kim Jung Un is serious about striking a deal for peace. When the President was asked about how long he thinks it’ll take for him to know if Kim Jung Un is serious about peace, he replied; “I think within the first minute I’ll know.”
“I think I’ll know pretty quickly whether or not, in my opinion, something positive will happen. And if I think it won’t happen, I’m not going to waste my time. I don’t want to waste his time.”
The historic meeting is set to take place on Tuesday, June 12th, 2018 at 9:00 AM (which is Monday, June 11th, 2018 9:00 pm Eastern Time.) Tuesday, June 12th, 2018 06:17 AM EST: The United States President and the North Korean Leader have signed a ‘comprehensive’ document to close off the historic Summit. In addition, the United States has compelled North Korea to continue with its commitment to denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.
The White House published the four significant agreements between the two nations;
- The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.–DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
- The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
- Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
- The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
After initial exchanges lasting around 40 minutes, Kim was heard telling Trump through a translator: “I think the entire world is watching this moment. Many people in the world will think of this as a scene from a fantasy…science fiction movie.”
The agreement further establishes the possibility of “new relations” between the two nations.
“President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S.–DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
At the close of the meeting, the United States President said that he expects to see the denuclearization process begin “very, very quickly.” Furthermore, Kim had told President Trump that North Korea was destroying a primary engine-testing site used for missiles, but maintained international sanctions on Pyongyang would stay in place for now.
As a result of the agreement, the President also stated that joint military exercises with South Korea would be halted for now; “unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should.”
Kim earlier said the two leaders had a historic meeting “and decided to leave the past behind. The world will see a major change.”
“Signing the joint statement would show North Korean citizens that Kim Jong Un is not a leader just within North Korea but also in international society, especially with his position equivalent to Trump,” said Ahn Chan-il, a defector from North Korea who currently lives in the South.
