(LifeSiteNews) — The CEO of the private U.K. bank Coutts has stepped down after facing backlash for the “de-banking” of popular British politician Nigel Farage.

According to a report by GB News, Peter Flavel has stepped down from his position at Coutts, citing the Farage de-banking scandal as the reason for his decision.

“In the handling of Mr. Farage’s case we have fallen below the bank’s high standards of personal service,” Flavel said. “As CEO of Coutts it is right that I bear ultimate responsibility for this, which is why I am stepping down.”

“I am exceptionally proud of my seven years at Coutts and I want to thank the team that have built it into such a high performing business,” the former CEO added.

Farage reacted to the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying that “It was only a matter of time before Peter Flavel, Coutts CEO, stood down.”

“I even wrote to Mr. Flavel twice before going public and didn’t receive an acknowledgment,” he added.

In June 2023 it became known that Coutts had shut down Farage’s bank accounts without giving a reason.
