Description:
A chlorine leak in the Pierre Municipal Pool's warming house led to a precautionary evacuation of the facility Monday afternoon. City workers performing a routine check on the pool's chlorine pumps noticed the small leak and immediately requested assistance from the Pierre Fire Department, said fire fighter Brandon McCarthy. Upon arrival at the pool fire fighters confirmed that a small leak had occurred and started work to ventilate the warming house. Steady winds threatened to blow light chlorine fumes toward the pool, McCarthy said, which prompted the evacuation. "It was just a precaution," McCarthy said. Pool customers were moved to a picnic shelter about 150 yards away from the pool in Griffin Park. No one appeared to have been affected by the fumes. Ventilation of the warming house wasn't expected to take too long, McCarthy said. But city officials decided to close pool for the rest of the day to give city workers time to fix the leak, he said. "It's going to take a while to get the pumps working properly," McCarthy said.
