Suffering is inescapable, but Christ and the saints have shown us how to embrace it: Bp. Strickland

(LifeSiteNews) — On this week’s episode of The Bishop Strickland Show, Bishop Joseph Strickland speaks about how Jesus Christ has given a redemptive meaning to suffering and what that means for us Christians.

“Redemptive suffering,” His Excellency explains, is the willing embrace of suffering for our own sanctification and growth in holiness.

Although suffering is inescapable in this life — not even Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother were spared from suffering — the lives of Christ and the saints show us how to embrace suffering for the sake of Christ’s Mystical Body, the Church.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe, for example, was offered by Our Lady a choice between a crown of white martyrdom and a crown of red martyrdom (signifying asceticism and death, respectively). In imitation of Christ, Kolbe chose both.
