SUDBURY, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) — A Sudbury LGBT organization cancelled its “Pride Parade” earlier this month after requesting local police stay away from the event.
On July 8, Sudbury Pride announced that it was scrapping its annual “Pride Parade” in support of Black Lives Matter Sudbury, which had called on Sudbury Pride “to decenter police within their programming and to acknowledge their harmful actions” as organizers worked with police in preparation for the parade.
Organizers for the “Pride Parade” met with Sudbury’s mayor to request that police be replaced with citizens to direct traffic at the parade. However, they were told that “current bylaws and restrictions through the Highway Traffic Act do not allow organizations to use city roads without police in place as traffic control.”
The group subsequently announced in a Facebook post that “after careful consideration, and in solidarity with our friends at Black Lives Matter Sudbury, we have made the decision to cancel the Pride March.”
