Former head of Canada’s telecommunications blasts Trudeau’s internet censorship bill as a ‘power grab’

OTTAWA (LifeSiteNews) – The former head of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s much-maligned internet censorship Bill C-11 should be shunned, calling it a “power grab over human communications.”

According to Blacklock’s Reporter, the comments were made by former CRTC commissioner Timothy Denton before a Senate committee hearing on Bill C-11 that took place Wednesday.

Critics have warned that Bill C-11 will stifle free speech online because it would classify YouTube videos, most of which are content-creator made, subject to regulation under the CRTC.

Both Bill C-11 and Bill C-18 seek to regulate the internet and force Big Tech companies to champion selected media outlets based on a special designation given by the federal government.

It is feared that Bill C-11 might force websites under the CRTC – including YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook – to remove content deemed “harmful” within 24 hours and compel services like Netflix to have more Canadian content.

Denton said that Trudeau’s C-11 “captures virtually all online audio and video.”

“(It’s) a power grab over human communications across the internet and therefore deserves our distinct disdain,” he noted.
