In Time of War, Israel Commemorates Shavuot (Pentecost): the Festival of Weeks

JERUSALEM, Israel – In a time of uncertainty and war in the Middle East, beginning Tuesday evening, Israelis will mark the holiday of Shavuot or Feast of Weeks, mentioned in both the Old and New Covenants of the Bible.

The first biblical mention is in the Book of Exodus. “Observe the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the agricultural year. Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel” (Exodus 34:22-23).

In the New Testament, After His resurrection, Yeshua told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received power from the Ruach HaKodesh, or Holy Spirit.

“When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages” (Acts 2:1-4).
