Joe Biden was sworn in as America’s 46th president on Wednesday morning, declaring that “democracy has prevailed.”

The new president called for unity in the country, saying, “We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue.”

In his first remarks as president, Biden also said his swearing-in marks a day of “history and hope.”

“The will of the people has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded. We’ve learned again that democracy is precious and democracy is fragile. At this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed,” Biden said. “This is America’s day. This is democracy’s day. A day in history and hope, of renewal and resolve.”

Biden took his oath on a Bible that has been in his family since 1893 and was used during his swearing-in as vice president in 2009 and 2013. The 5-inch thick Bible has a Celtic cross on its cover and was also used each time he was sworn-in as a U.S. senator.
