Ontario politician who refused COVID vaccine removed as Deputy Speaker

(LifeSiteNews) – Independent Ontario MPP Rick Nicholls said people should not be “penalized for their choice” to refuse the COVID jabs, while having to announce he was forced to step down as Deputy Speaker of the Ontario Legislature. 

“The government attempted to force me into getting the vaccine or be removed from caucus. Sticking to my values and my principles, I refused to get the vaccine,” Nicholls said at a press conference on Tuesday at Queen’s Park.

“As a result … I am announcing that I am stepping down as the deputy speaker and chair of the committee of the whole house.”

On Tuesday, Ontario’s provincial government under Premier Doug Ford passed a motion to boot Nicholls from his role as Deputy Speaker, a position he has held since 2018. 

Nicholls, who represents the riding Chatham-Kent-Leamington, said Tuesday that he is not an anti-vaxxer, but “People should not be penalized for their choice to either get vaccinated or to not be vaccinated.”
