Gun safety took the spotlight at the White House on Monday with President Biden hailing a new law that aims to reduce gun violence.
He viewed the measure as making “real progress” while insisting that more needs to be done.
The Safe Communities Act, which passed last month with votes from both parties, includes the most significant firearm restrictions enacted by Congress in decades.
Flanked by recent victims of gun violence, Biden praised the most sweeping gun legislation in decades.
“Lives will be saved today and tomorrow because of this,” he said.
“We’re living in a country that is awash with weapons of war,” Biden added while asserting that he plans to push for more.
Many members of Congress attended the event including Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) who led negotiations on behalf of Republicans.
Emotions also ran high during the event as the father of a child killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida shouted, “I’ve been telling you this for years!”
The legislation, which was passed 16 days ago, follows recent gun violence in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas.
It toughens requirements for young people to buy guns, denies firearms to more domestic abusers, and helps local authorities temporarily confiscate weapons from people believed to be dangerous.
While this is the most significant firearms violence measure passed by Congress since 1993, gun control advocates agree it’s premature to declare victory.
The measure is already overshadowed by the July 4 shooting at a parade outside Chicago.
While gun control activists applaud the milestone, those who support gun rights say it’s not the answer.
“They don’t come back and say let’s unite behind law enforcement to stop criminals, to keep our kids safe. They immediately demagogue and say the solution is to take your arms. The solution is to disarm law-abiding citizens,” said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
