Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister says that the West is seeking an “escalation” of the conflict, since “allowing” Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russian territory. For the first time, Kiev has used ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems) to strike Russian soil.
Kiev couldn’t have struck Russia using ATACMS missiles without Washington’s participation, said Lavrov. Mere hours ago, U.S.-made ATACMS missiles were used in an attack on Russia’s Bryansk Region, according to a report by RT. This was supposed to be Russia’s final “red line” that hadn’t been crossed.
Previously, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Ukrainian military had launched six long-range ATACMS missiles on the border region, noting that five of them had been intercepted by Russian air-defense systems, while another was damaged and hit the ground near a military base.
The attack comes after United States President Joe Biden said that Ukraine was now “allowed” to use donated long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russian territory. According to RT, while speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Lavrov admitted that he had no way to confirm whether the media reports regarding Biden’s permission granted to Kiev were true. However, he suggested that ATACMS strikes on Bryansk Region were a “clear sign that they want escalation.”
It does appear that the U.S., and other Western nations, along with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) are seeking an escalation in this war. That was apparent as soon as the U.S. ruler made the declaration that Ukraine could attack Russia with ATACMS.
The minister noted that it is impossible to use the technologically complex ATACMS launchers without the help of the US, and recalled Russian President Vladimir Putin’s prior warning that Moscow would be forced to change its position if Ukraine received permission to use Western long-range weapons against Russian territory.
