Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has warned of global chaos after US President Donald Trump ordered strikes against chemical weapons research facilities and depots in Syria.
Days after an alleged chemical attack against Syrian civilians, in which five hundred people were reportedly affected by chemical weapons, the United States launched precision strikes against the Syrian government to thwart the further use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Without an independent investigation, the United States Government launched strikes against the Middle Eastern nation, to which Russia has responded by denouncing the strikes and by allegedly increasing its ‘troll army’ by two thousand percent. However, President Putin is warning of global chaos if the attacks against Syria continue.
Before the strikes, Russia’s envoy to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin stated in an interview that any missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and that the sources from which they came would be attacked. Hours later the United States has attacked Syria successfully and without a physical rebuttal from Russia.
Days after the strike, Sunday, April 15th, 2018, the Russian President is warning that global chaos could result from any additional strikes against Syria. President Putin made the aforementioned comments while in a phone call to his Iranian counterpart.
Both the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and the Russian President agreed during their phone call that the Western strikes had damaged the chances of a political resolution in the seven-year Syria conflict, according to a Kremlin statement.
“Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions committed in violation of the U.N. Charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in international relations,” the Kremlin statement said.
The Western nations involved in the strike against Syria jointly issued that the attacks were not committed with the intention of toppling Assad or intervening in the civil war. The strikes were limited to the chemical weapons capabilities of the Syrian government.
Putin failed to hold his previous word which was to thwart the attacks and destroy the launchpads from which the missiles came, but now he is making another claim that global chaos could come from further strikes against Syria… Interesting.
Whether you like or loathe Putin, like or loathe Assad, the fact remains that these strikes were in contravention of the UN Charter, and therefore illegal. When countries arbitrarily decide which International Laws apply, and which do not, you no longer have the rule of law. You have the rule of tyranny. Do we want to go there? Do we want to play (almost literally) Russian roulette with our children’s future? If you answer no to those questions then the only responsible action is to condemn the attacks and demand that they stop.
(And before someone comes here accusing me of turning a blind eye, or whatever, to the alleged chemical weapons attack that was the casus belli for this, there is currently no proof that one took place, whereas there is ample proof (from the UN itself) that the terrorists have used these weapons on multiple occasions. The OPCW should be permitted to do its job, and we go from there, by following due process and law.)
