Senate Expected to Vote on $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill Next Week

Updated: August 5, 2021 at 4:57 pm EST  See Comments

WASHINGTON – After about a week of debate on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, the end is near.

The Senate is expected to take a final vote on it in just a few days. The $1.2 trillion deal will likely pass with substantial support from both parties.

Because there are quite a few Republicans who do not plan to vote in favor of it and will likely use some of the 30 hours of post-cloture debate time, the final vote will probably take place early next week – and it is expected to garner the 60 votes need to pass and move forward.

But before the Senate is adjourned for August recess, Democrats plan to immediately move on to consideration of the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill, which only needs a simple majority to pass.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said, “Our goal is to pass both a bipartisan infrastructure bill and a budget reconciliation bill during this work period and we will stay here to get both done.”

No Republican is expected to support the reconciliation bill which they refer to as a reckless tax and spending spree – and the GOP leader argues Democrats will be solely responsible for what this does to our current debt crisis.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, “Let me make something perfectly clear, if they don’t need or want our input, they won’t get our help with the debt limit increase that these reckless plans will require.”

Since the Senate was supposed to begin August recess this coming Monday, they’ll work through the weekends until both of these bills are voted on and they can adjourn until September.
