Supreme Court declares Maine law blocking tax dollars from religious schools unconstitutional

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday handed down a major win for American families who opt to send their children to religious schools, ruling that a Maine law prohibiting taxpayer school choice dollars from going to religious institutions was unconstitutional.

In a 6-3 majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the nation’s highest court ruled in Carson v. Makin that Maine had violated the First Amendment’s Free Exercise clause by cutting religious schools out of its taxpayer-funded tuition assistance program, Courthouse News reported.

Maine’s tuition assistance program distributes taxpayer-funded vouchers to families, allowing them to send their children to a public or private school of their choice. Under the Supreme Court ruling, Maine will no longer be able to prevent parents from using state-sponsored tuition assistance to send their children to religious schools.

In a Tuesday tweet, the Washington Free Beacon characterized the ruling as “the biggest victory the school choice movement has ever achieved in the Supreme Court.”
