JERUSALEM, Israel – Syrian state media said that Israel conducted air raids near the country’s capital of Damascus late Thursday night.

Residents of Damascus reported hearing at least five loud explosions that shook apartment buildings for 15 minutes just after 11 p.m. Syrian state media said government forces confronted the Israeli planes.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition war monitor, claimed the Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah military sites and weapons depots in Damascus and the Homs region north of the capital.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

A military source told Syrian media that Israel fired the missiles from Lebanon. Lebanese Defense Minister Zeika Akar complained to the United Nations, saying Israel’s airstrikes “blatantly violated Lebanon’s airspace at low altitude, causing a state of panic among citizens,” Reuters reported on Friday.

Israel rarely comments on reports of its activity on Syria but has carried out hundreds of attacks on Iranian-linked targets in the country. Israel has vowed to fight Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier.
