JERUSALEM, Israel – An anti-aircraft missile from Syria exploded over northern Israel overnight Tuesday and set off warning sirens, Israel’s military said.

Israel did not intercept the missile, but there were no injuries or casualties reported.

In response to the anti-aircraft missile, Israel’s military carried out airstrikes in Syria.

“We just struck surface-to-air missile targets in Syria, including radar and anti-aircraft batteries,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

Syrian official news agency SANA reported that Israel fired surface-to-surface missiles near the capital of Damascus and some of them were brought down by air defenses. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Israel routinely carries out strikes against Iranian proxies in Syria, but hardly ever comments on such attacks. However, Israel has admitted to targeting the bases of Iranian forces and Iranian-backed terror groups like Hezbollah. Hezbollah is fighting on the side of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the country’s civil war.
