Throughout the twentieth century, America physically fought socialism and communism to prevent the infectiously dangerous virus that is behind the economic and political ideology. However, in the twenty-first century, America is electing those same ideologies to its own Government.

In New York in June of 2018 a young twenty-eight-year-old, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, ousted a ten-term liberal incumbent, Rep. Joe Crowley, reason being, voters felt as though he wasn’t liberal enough.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not just any candidate, she is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and her policies, voters identified with. However, she is not the only individual who ascribes to Democratic-Socialism, rather another individual who lost in the 2016 presidential race, housed great promise with the youth of America, Bernie Sanders.

The pair are not the only Socialists attempting to gain Office within the United States Government, however, they, like their many other associates, represent a vast swath of young Americans who are continually leaning to the far-left.

Over the course of the last hundred years Socialism has both died and been reborn, and this time, its gaining ground in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

While during the twentieth century, many outlandish liberals desired to change the course of America, they resorted to violence and chaos to no avail. However, in the twenty-first century what once was considered the Left’s farthest flank is rapidly becoming mainstream.

In addition to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory, in July of 2018, in Maine, Democrat Zak Ringelstein joined the ranks of the Democratic Socialists after his win, and will further become the only major-party Senate candidate to do so.

It’s clear that a change on the left is occurring, and it is one that involves groups like Antifa, and other major socialist movements. In the age of Trump, Socialism is gaining ground and with it comes a dangerous new political territory.
